Essential elements for health - V
Hi Friends,
Let us gain more knowledge regarding essential elements for health. In our last post, we were discussing about Minerals. Let us continue.
Calcium:
In our body, the bones and the teeth have approximately 99% of the total calcium of the body. Vitamin 'D' is essential for the metabolism and absorption of calcium in the body. Calcium is necessary for the working of enzymes. It supplies energy for the contraction of the muscles. Calcium prevents swelling and bleeding. Due to deficiency of calcium, the bones become brittle, the blood circulation slows down and the blood loses its capacity for coagulation. Mental strain and stress interrupt the capacity of the body for absorbing calcium.
Fenugreek, drumstick and other leafy vegetables, beet, fig, grapes, water-melon, milk, dried fruits, millet, sesame seeds, black beans, etc. have abundant amount of calcium.
Phosphorus:
Phosphorus is considered to be most important mineral for human beings, next to Calcium. The bones and teeth contain 75% of the total phosphorus of the body. The remaining 25% phosphorus lies in the various parts of the body and does the following important functions:
1. Phosphorus is essential for the growth and nourishment of the body.
2. It activates the digestive juices.
3. It helps the process of metabolism of sygar and fats.
4. It is also essential for the functioning of the brain and the nerves.
The deficiency of phosphorus weakens the teeth and the bones and causes a loss in weight. The body requires a minimum of 1.0 gram of phosphorus daily.
Phosphorus is available from milk, yeast, dried fruits, soyabean, carrot, guava, dates etc.
Iron:
Approximately 70% of the total iron of the body forms a part of haemoglobin in the red corpuscles of the body. The oxidation going in the body depends on these red corpuscles. 20% iron is preserved in the liver. Besides, the muscles have iron in the form of myoglobine. Iron is found in 'serum transferrin' and some enzymes. Iron is necessary for supplying oxygen, through lungs to each cell of the body. It is also necessary for the respiration of the cells. The deficiency of iron causes anemia. Many a time, due to lack of Vitamin 'C' and 'E', the red corpuscles are destroyed. In such cases the body require more iron. The minimum requirement of iron in the body per day is 12.0 mg but increases many times in case of pregnancy.
Iron is found in plenty in green leafy vegetables (particularly fenugreek and mint), mango, dates, sesame, millet, grams, soyabeans, mung, black beans, pistachio, nuts etc.
Besides Calcium, phosphorus and iron, there are other minerals useful to the body.
We will discuss them in our next post.
