Essential elements for health - IV

Hi Friends,

Let us go ahead in gaining knowledge.

Vitamin 'P' (Bioflavonoids):

This vitamin is necessary for maintaining health of the blood vessels and for normalising blood pressure.

It is found in citrus fruits and vegetables.

Individual characteristics of various vitamins have been described above but experiments have confirmed of better reusults when vitamins are used in combination. The presense of one vitamin increases the efficacy of another vitamin.

Our body itself also is capable of producing some vitamins. These are several benevolent symbiotic bacteria in the intestines, which produce vitamins for the body. These bacteria particularly produce vitamins 'B', 'E' and 'K'. Antibiotic drugs destroy these bacteria and so we should use these drugs cautiously.

The body can store or accumulate vitamins 'A', 'D', 'E' and 'K'. These vitamins are available from the body storage when need arises. However, vitamins 'B' and 'C' cannot be stored in the body. So we should be careful to see that we obtain these vitamins from our daily diet.

Of all vitamins, Vitamin 'C' is destroyed most rapidly and easily. All the vitamins are destroyed to a greater or lesser degree when exposed to heat or air (oxygen) or if food is stored for a long time. If a banana is cut into pieces or is grated and kept for sometime, it loses about 50% of its vitamin 'C'.

Vitamin 'A' is stable to moderate heat but if the food is cooked open, it is destroyed immediately. As said earlier, some vitamins (B, C) are are water soluble and some are fat soluble. The body can obtain vitamins 'B' and 'C' easily but if the diet is short of fats, the body finds it difficult to get vitamin 'A', 'D' and 'E'. If oil is used as purgative, vitamins 'A' and 'D' are discharged, with stools. So it is not advisable to use oil for purgative purposes. Many experiments shows that vitamins are most effective when taken in their natural forms. Thats is why natural vitamins contained in fruit and vegetable juices assume great importance.

The importance of minerals:

Minerals are essential for maintaining optimal health. As regards the functions of minerals, the following formation has been compiled through various experiments:

1. Minerals are essential constituents of all cells.
2. They form the greater portion of bones, teeth and nails.
3. They are essential components of respiratory pigments, enzymes and enzyme systems.
4. They regulate the permeability of cell membranes and capilaries.
5. They regulate the excitability of muscular and nervous tissues.
6. They are essential for regulation of osmotic pressure equilibria
7. They are necessary for maintenance of proper acid-base balance.
8. They are essential constituents of secretions of glands.
9. They play an important role in water metabolis and regulation of blood volume.

Out of the various minerals, calcium, phosphorus and iron are most important.

We will discuss more about minerals in our next posts.
